Making the Abdominoplasty Decision

There are certain things to consider before making big life decisions. Let’s discuss one that we come across often.

SHOULD I WAIT UNTIL AFTER PREGNANCY TO GET A TUMMY TUCK?

A very valid question indeed. Many women mistakenly believe that falling pregnant and giving birth post Tummy Tuck procedure could be difficult or unachievable. This actually isn’t the case. The tummy tuck procedure doesn’t interfere with a woman’s ability to fall pregnant and successfully carry a baby to term. Though they may end up carrying the baby a little higher than they regularly would, this isn’t a major problem.

From a medical standpoint, however, there are benefits to waiting until after pregnancy to get a Tummy Tuck.

During the Tummy Tuck procedure, the surgeon is able to repair Diastasis Recti, a separation of the Rectus Abdominus muscles that commonly occurs with pregnancy. This is necessary to bring the muscles and superficial appearance back to what it used to look like. If the procedure takes place prior to pregnancy, the patient may experience Diastasis Recti again, which could necessitate revision surgery later on.

Whether you decide to wait or not depends on a few variables that ought to be discussed.

ARE YOU PLANNING ON HAVING ANOTHER CHILD?

And are these plans in the short or long term?

If you know you are going to try to fall pregnant again, it is advisable to hold off until after you have had your last baby. We would suggest going ahead with the surgery only after you have completed your family.

A tummy tuck is a major surgery, and it is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Dr Damon Thomas will help you weigh the pros and cons of the procedure so you can decide on your path forward. When you know your goals, he will work with you to formulate a plan that achieves results while prioritizing your safety. MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION

Our website is intended to provide general information about abdominoplasty and should not be used as a substitute for personalised medical advice. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if abdominoplasty is the right procedure for you. The following considerations should be part of your decision-making process.

Risks

All surgical procedures carry risk. The potential risks and complications associated with abdominoplasty include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, changes in skin sensation, contour irregularities, fluid accumulation, unfavourable scarring, and fat necrosis. It is important to understand the risks involved and weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of surgery before undergoing abdominoplasty.

Recovery

Recovery time after abdominoplasty may vary depending on the individual, the extent of the procedure, and the technique used. In general, patients should be prepared to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after surgery. Patients must also be prepared to take time off work and other activities (including exercise) and follow post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and minimise the risk of complications.

Results

Individual results may vary depending on a number of factors, including the patient’s natural body shape, the amount of excess skin and fat removed, and the surgical technique employed. It is critical to have realistic expectations about the outcome of abdominoplasty and understand that each patient’s outcome will be unique. It is also important to know that abdominoplasty is not intended to be a substitute for weight loss or replace a healthy lifestyle and exercise routine.
