What Is a Breast Lift?

Dr Damon Thomas offers a variety of breast procedures that cater to a diverse array of situations, needs and desires. Whether you are after a Breast Augmentation in order to add volume to the bust, a Breast Reduction to decrease size and increase day-to-day comfort, or would like a Breast Lift to rejuvenate your bust to a more youthful position, Dr Damon Thomas can help.

WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT?

A Breast Lift, otherwise referred to as a Mastopexy, is a procedure that lifts the breasts into a more youthful position. It involves the movement of the breast tissue and the repositioning of the areola to a higher location.

Unlike a Breast Augmentation procedure, a Breast Lift does not require the use of implants. Breast implants provide volume and size to the breasts, whereas in a Breast Lift, this is not the primary goal. The overall goal is the rejuvenation of the breasts via elevation. The result of a breast lift is a perkier appearance whilst still staying true to your original size and shape.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT PROCEDURE FOR ME?

A Breast Lift can be an ideal procedure for women who wish to address the effects of ageing. As we age, the ligaments that hold the breasts in place gradually stretch and loosen, allowing the breasts to sag naturally. This process is called ptosis.

It is important to keep in mind that ptosis happens to every woman over time. You are not alone in the ageing process. The good news is, although unavoidable, the cosmetic aspects of this process can be reversed. Dr Damon Thomas can reposition the breasts, tighten the surrounding area and remove any excess skin, giving your breasts a more youthful shape and position.

The major difference to consider when contemplating a Breast Lift procedure is whether you are currently content with the size and shape of your breasts. A Breast Lift is a viable option for women who are happy with the size and shape of their bust, though unhappy with the location. If, however, you desire a fuller bust, a Breast Augmentation may be a more suitable procedure.

During your initial consultation with Dr Damon Thomas, he will thoroughly assess your situation and provide professional advice.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

The procedure takes approximately one to two hours, with most patients being able to return home the same day as surgery. We recommend that all travel arrangements be made prior to your hospital visit, to ensure that you have transportation home organised and ready post-procedure.

WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK?

Returning to work and other daily activities will solely rely on your individual recovery period. Most patients can return to limited physical activity within a few weeks of surgery. Keep in mind that you will not be permitted to drive for the two-week period that follows your procedure.

Vigorous physical activity must be avoided for the initial six-week recovery period, in order for the breasts to heal correctly without interference. During this six-week recovery process, Mr Damon Thomas will oversee your healing and check in regularly at your scheduled follow-up appointments. This will allow him to change dressings, assess your recovery and answer any queries you may have at the time.

WILL THERE BE VISIBLE SCARRING?

In order for Dr Thomas to lift the breasts successfully, he typically uses the ‘lollipop’ incision method. The ‘lollipop’ incision allows him to achieve varying degrees of lift required. Due to the nature of the incision employed, there will be visible scarring.

Many women weigh up the pros and cons and decide that a more youthful and shapely bust contour is worth the scarring that takes place. Mr Damon Thomas is very aware of the desire for minimal scarring, and if there are any alternatives available that are beneficial to your situation, he will let you know during the consultation process.

HOW MUCH DOES A BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE COST?

We prefer to give you the facts about your situation, procedure and costs upon thorough assessment and discussion. During your initial consultation, Dr Thomas can discuss all aspects of your Breast Lift procedure with you, allowing you to gain the necessary knowledge before making the decision to continue. Price will always rely on your current situation, as well as your aesthetic goals and desires. Once Dr Thomas is aware of both of these, the price of your procedure will be determined.

MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION

Our website is intended to provide general information about breast lift surgery and should not be used as a substitute for personalised medical advice. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if a breast lift is the right procedure for you. The following considerations should be part of your decision-making process.

Risks

All surgical procedures carry risk. The potential risks and complications associated with breast lift surgery include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, poor scarring and the need for additional surgery. It is important to understand the risks involved and weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of surgery before undergoing a breast lift.

Recovery

Recovery time after breast lift surgery may vary depending on the individual, the extent of the procedure, and the technique used. In general, patients should be prepared to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after surgery. Patients must also be prepared to take time off work and other activities (including exercise) and follow Dr Thomas’ post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and minimise the risk of complications.

Results

Individual results may vary depending on a number of factors, including the patient’s natural breast tissue and the surgical technique employed. It is critical to have realistic expectations about the outcome of breast lift surgery and understand that each patient’s outcome will be unique. It is also important to know that breast lift surgery is not intended to add volume to the breasts and cannot stop the ageing process.
