The Lowdown on Liposuction

The localised regions of fat around your abdomen, thighs and chin can be particularly frustrating. When you’re unable to remove fat on your own, liposuction may be a viable solution.

Liposuction targets those stubborn pockets of fat that you haven’t been able to reach. By trimming down excess fat around your body, you can improve your proportions and look slimmer in the process.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?

Fat removal involves the injection of a liquid mixture made up of sterile saline and a local anaesthetic. The mixture softens the fat which makes it easier for Dr Thomas to remove during surgery.

He will use a narrow cannula to suction the fat from your body which involves a few small incisions into the treatment area. Your fat is collected and either disposed of or used for a fat transfer into a different region.

WHAT’S THE RECOVERY LIKE?

Because the incisions for liposuction are small, recovery time is typically shorter compared to a more invasive procedure like abdominoplasty. Expect some swelling and discomfort, especially in the early stages. Dr Thomas may provide you with a prescription for pain management medication. Most patients are instructed to wear a compression garment after liposuction to help manage swelling and support the area as it heals.

Recovery times vary based on the extent of the liposuction and individual healing rates. Many patients can begin to return to their normal routine after a week of downtime. If your work requires strenuous physical activity, Dr Thomas may recommend taking more time off before returning. You will follow up with Dr Thomas periodically to ensure you are healing properly.

IS LIPOSUCTION RIGHT FOR YOU?

Liposuction can be effective for both men and women who have isolated pockets of fat that remain despite diet and exercise.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; it should be performed only when a patient is at or near their goal weight and their weight is stable. Candidates for liposuction should also present with good skin elasticity as the procedure does not target sagging skin. Additionally, candidates must be prepared to commit to a healthy lifestyle, as weight fluctuations post-liposuction can change the results of the procedure.

During a consultation with Dr. Thomas, you can learn whether liposuction is a suitable treatment option for you. Together, you can examine the quality of your skin, review your medical history and discuss your cosmetic goals.

MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION

Our website is intended to provide general information about liposuction and should not be used as a substitute for personalised medical advice. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if liposuction is the right procedure for you. The following considerations should be part of your decision-making process.

Risks

All surgical procedures carry risk. The potential risks and complications associated with liposuction include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, changes in sensation, contour irregularities, fluid accumulation, internal puncture and fat embolism. It is important to understand the risks involved and weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of surgery before undergoing liposuction.

Recovery

Recovery time after liposuction may vary depending on the individual, the extent of the procedure, and the technique used. In general, patients should be prepared to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after surgery. Patients must also be prepared to take time off work and other activities (including exercise) and follow post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and minimise the risk of complications.

Results

Individual results may vary depending on a number of factors, including the patient’s natural body shape, the amount of fat removed, and the surgical technique employed. It is critical to have realistic expectations about the outcome of liposuction and understand that each patient’s outcome will be unique. It is also important to know that liposuction is not intended to be a substitute for weight loss or replace a healthy lifestyle and exercise routine.
