WHAT IS A MOLE?

A mole is a very common skin lesion that is deemed non-cancerous. They are growths on the skin that are usually of brown or black colouring and can appear anywhere. The reason you have moles present on your skin is due to abnormal skin cell growth. When skin cells grow in a group instead of spread throughout the skin, moles occur.

WHY SHOULD I GET IT REMOVED?

Although moles generally do not cause any cancerous concerns, there are several common reasons Dr Damon Thomas notices as to why many patients wish them to be removed.

  • The mole is not aesthetically pleasing. Many moles can be raised or large, which some patients consider unsightly.
  • The mole has become a nuisance, interfering with clothing, shaving or catching on items and causing discomfort.
  • The mole may become cancerous later on. Just because a mole may not be harmful at present, doesn’t mean it can’t become malignant in the future. By removing the mole before this occurs, you can decrease your chance of cancer and breathe easier. These type of moles look different to others and tend to change over time. Therefore if you notice any changes in your moles, contact Dr Damon Thomas immediately to perform a skin check.

HOW DO I GET MY MOLE REMOVED?

Dr Damon Thomas can eliminate a mole using a variety of techniques and methods. These include though are not limited to:

  • Shave Excision – The area is numbed and the mole then removed with a scalpel.
  • Surgical Excision – A small incision is made, the entire mole removed and then sutured closed. This technique is ideal for those with larger, flatter Moles that lie deep within the skin.
  • Laser Therapy – This can be performed to vaporise the lesion completely. This method is ideal for smaller, lighter moles in prominent areas.
  • IPL Therapy – This treatment is similar to Laser Therapy, though uses Intense Pulsed Light.

Most of these removal techniques require day surgery, using local anaesthetic.

WILL A SCAR BE PRESENT AFTER THE MOLE IS REMOVED?

Depending on what technique is used by Dr Damon Thomas, your mole removal may leave a scar. This scar can potentially fade over time depending on the location of the mole, depth and size. Proper scar management is important for ensuring the best healing and most inconspicuous final appearance.

Dr Damon Thomas will make every effort to keep scarring to a minimum. During your consultation, all aspects of your mole removal treatment will be explained, allowing you to have realistic expectations before the procedure takes place.

MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION

Our website is intended to provide general information about mole removal and should not be used as a substitute for personalised medical advice. It is important to consult with a qualified medical professional to determine if mole removal surgery is the right procedure for you. The following considerations should be part of your decision-making process.

Risks

All surgical procedures carry risk. The potential risks and complications associated with mole removal surgery include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, scarring, recurrence, and changes in skin sensation. It is important to understand the risks involved and weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of surgery before undergoing mole removal.

Recovery

Recovery after mole removal surgery may vary depending on the individual, the size and location of the mole, and the technique used. While downtime is not usually required, patients may experience some discomfort after surgery. Patients must also be prepared to follow post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and minimise the risk of complications.

Results

Individual results may vary depending on a number of factors, including the size and location of the mole, the technique used, and the healing process. It is critical to have realistic expectations about the outcome of mole removal surgery and understand that each patient’s outcome will be unique.
